Chapter 33 – Days of Fun and Then New Haven

Bette: And remember, if you lose electricity, you very well could lose water. The pumps to send the water through the pipes run on electricity. But water might return first as the pumps were not on campus but located in the town. The good news is that the hot water is heated with natural gas as the water in the radiator heat is. So, a hot shower may be one of the first luxuries you experience after a few days of no electricity.

Tina: My advice is for you to keep your cell phones and your computers fully charged. It may be your only means of communication. Conserve the charge on your cells and computers if the electricity goes out. Do not keep your cells or computers on 24/7 with no ability to recharge. Text a message that you are okay and a time when you send your next message then turn it off. Then hunker down and get through it.

Mary: And do not contact the authorities unless it is a real emergency, as you need rescuing or medical attention. They will be over whelmed and do not need every one and his brother asking for a weather report.

Bette: Most of these type storms are rare and they will probably restore your power withing three days. But remember, it could go as long as a week. So, watch your supplies. Eat and eat regularly but keep your quantities small so that it will last. You might want to get an additional case of bottled water. Encourage your suitemates and friend to keep an extra case of water as well. You can cut your food consumption but you will need water. That is imperative.

Suzanne: Angie told me some of this during the summer. I had never considered what would happen if the place lost electricity for several days. Considering we are depending on the Student Union for our meals, you have provided us with a plan for that loss. But the water? Wow. I need to go buy a case or two and put it in my closet.

Angie: We can go to the grocery store either tomorrow afternoon or Monday. I have a case under the sink for current use and a case in the closet. We will meet our suitemates then as well. Maybe one is an upper classman and has a car?
