Chapter 38 – Last Week at Redondo Beach
Bette had been checking both Angie and Daniel’s accounts at least twice per week. She chose Monday evening and Thursday night to review their transactions. There were small incidental expenditures but nothing which caused Bette to question what either child was doing with their money. Angie was transferring money on a regular basis to a savings account where Daniel was somewhat less regular. She would remind Daniel that he needed to start making it a habit to transfer money to savings. This was only the second week of school so things were still new for both of her children.
They arrived at the Wilkens home about 5 minutes ahead of schedule. Daniel took his suitcase into John David’s room where he would be staying. He then came out and said bye to Bette and then he and John David got into the backseat of the Wilkens’ car. Joey got into the front seat. Bette drove back to the beach house. Bette and Tina decided to pack up the freezer and refrigerator first. They also decided to drive both Angie’s car and Bette’s car so they could get Angie’s car into its parking space. They would have packed up more, but they simply ran out of time. By 8:30, they needed to be on the road to Santa Monica.
Bette took in the coolers and began to put the food either in the fridge or the freezer where they belonged. They were just finishing putting the freezer and refrigerated foods up when Jim arrived. He was all smiles when he saw that the two of them were putting things away in the kitchen. Then it dawned on Bette and Tina: the kitchen would need to be unpacked and put away. That may be a far bigger chore than unpacking their clothes and knick knacks. Their weekend was going to be long and physically demanding.
They began the tour of the house with Jim. He had the samples for the drapes and fabrics for each room. Bette and Tina were thrilled with Jim’s selections. The fabrics were rich in color and he guaranteed they would be made to be blackout drapes. They like his choices for comforters and linens and furniture upholstery. He said, he thought he would be able to have all the new furnishings and the drapes install by the end of October. If there were pieces that need to be re-upholstered, well that would take a little longer. But by Saturday, he would at least know how much of that needed to be done and he would start that process the next week.
