Chapter 39 – Moving Weekend
Tina had ordered a massive lunch for the group of deli sandwiches, chips and soft drinks. The mattresses were placed on the bed frames and they left. Jim and Charlie and crew went and placed the two sitting rooms of furniture, removed the quilts from the elevator, reinstalled the back door and storm door and then joined Bette and Tina on the covered patio for lunch.
Jim: Thank you for lunch. I had not expected this. But now that all the furniture is in, you are now into the hard part of moving. The unpacking and the organizing. My guys will be here to make the beds. Do you have any throw pillows or anything you want to put on the beds to make them look more homey?
Bette: I believe we do, but my bets are that nothing matches the walls. But we’ll look for the boxes and unload those. If we find them, we’ll just use them and you can get new ones when you get the matching linens for each room. For today, we just want all the beds ready for use. We need to get the towels into the bathrooms so they will be ready for use. We worked on putting the supplies in yesterday.
Tina: No honey, that was early this morning.
Charlie: Miss Bette and Miss Tina, I want to thank you guys for allowing us to be your movers. We have been well cared for on this trip and it has been a real pleasure.
Jim: So how long will it be before you are home?
Charlie: We will be home by tomorrow evening. Miss Bette arranged that these are one-way truck rentals and for us to stay in a hotel tonight and rest and then fly to New York tomorrow morning.
One of the crew: I just want to know what I should say when my wife wants to know why all my clothes are clean. She’s going to think I got a girlfriend somewhere.
Charlie: Have her call me if that’s the case. This kind of thing does not happen often, but if Bette and Tina had not done this, I would have insisted you guys do laundry at the hotel this afternoon. You need to learn how to help your wives out. Doing the laundry when you have free time is one of those ways. Believe you me, there is a big payoff to doing laundry before you go home. Gives the little woman free time and she hasn’t seen me in a week. Pardon me… I guess that was a little crude.
