Deputy: Okay please help me figure this out, what’s going on?

Kit took a deep breath and told the deputy everything from the beginning.

Deputy: Wow. If that’s true, we will have to get DNA testings done on you as well, and if by some miracle you are her biological mother, then the authorities will turn her over to your care.

Kit: How long will it take?

Deputy: A couples of days.

Kit: Days? I’m not leaving her in this place for a couple of days, not happening.

Deputy: Actually she will be placed in foster care tonight, Child Protective Services are already on their way to take her. Once the test results come back and a thoroughly investigation has been done, I’m sure the judge will give you primary custody of the child but there is a process that we must follow.

Kit: Can I go talk to her at least?

Deputy: I think what she needs right now is rest Ms. Porter, I’m sure you agree to that, she’s been through enough.

Kit: I’m not leaving without talking to her.

Deputy: Ms. Porter?

Kit: I got to make sure she is safe and will be placed somewhere nice until I can get her, I want to meet the Child Protection agent whose coming to pick her up.

Deputy: Okay I will allow that but you must not go to the center where she will be placed, you’re not authorized yet to do so and if you are caught there with your sister and her wife, I will not hesitate to arrest all of you for trespassing.

Kit: Understood.

The deputy talked and gave Kit some more information about what the next couples of days will look like so she would be prepared. Afterwards, Kit left his office to go find Bette and Tina. When she walked into the lobby area, Bette and Tina were sitting drinking a cup of coffee, it was the first time they seemed normal since arriving in Big Bear. Tina looked at Kit’s face and could tell something was wrong, she had been crying.

Bette: Kit what the hell were you doing in there? We’ve been waiting for almost an hour.

Kit: The deputy needed to take some information from me.

Tina: And what about Angelica?

Kit: She will be placed in foster care tonight.

Tina: No I mean, did you recognize her?

Kit: Yes.

Kit began to tremble.

Bette: How?

Kit didn’t answer Bette’s question. She was frightened. She didn’t know how she was going to explain everything to Bette, but most of all, she knew their relationship would probably never be the same again after this.

Kit: I’m going to wait here for the agent to pick her up.

Bette: Why?? Kit, who is this girl to you? What are you not telling us? Don’t lie to me!

Kit took a deep breath.

Kit: She’s my daughter Bette.

Everyone just stood with their mouths opened, even the police officer. Bette blinked her eyes, shaking her head, she tried to speak but there were no words to express how shocked she was.
