LENOX HILL HOSPITAL-8
Tina rolled her eyes ”sorry, you know after the surgery I left all my files and my patients behind… and the interns cause damage like hail.” ”Can I sit down for a bit?” she asked looking at Bette who nodded smiling.
The blonde threw herself on the chair, stretching her arms and feet in a physiological stretch that made Bette smile inside herself.
”So the whole hospital is talking about you…” Bette began
”Yes…unfortunately”
”You mean you don’t like it?”
”No well…I love it when my work is recognized..but this time, I didn’t do much, a little clump, Alice or other neo-fetal surgeons could have done it.”
”Alice is pissed off”
”With me? Tell me no” Tina said dramatically
”No with De Luca…”
the name alone annoyed Bette.
”she acted for the best Bette…”
”are you sure?”
”of what?”
”that she acted for the best?”
”why should I question that?”
Bette sighed ”nothing…” she let out.
”I’d like to know…” Tina laughed nervously looking at the brunette ”what do you think?”
”why should you care?” Bette said it too bitterly and Tina recognized it.
”I care about you, that’s all” Tina looked at her hands in her lap, she didn’t know what was happening there.
”Well the hospital wouldn’t think you were interesting if you wasted their time with me…you’re giving them what they want” now it was Bette who lowered her eyes.
Tina remained silent, highlighting the parts of that strange sentence, what kind of statement was it? A dig? She looked at Bette confused.
”I don’t know why you talk like that Bette…..but I’m not the type to talk…no. I do nothing to please..I do everything from the heart, you should know that.” she added looking at the brunette fixedly.
Bette felt like dying for a moment ”so Karina…is it a heart thing?”
”It’s inappropriate.”
”Why, we’re friends, right?”
”Then why would you care?” the word friend, she would have killed Tina but she decided to move on, Bette was making her nervous.
”in fact…just forget it..” Bette muttered, getting out of bed to go and stand in front of the window, it was raining outside and she was watching the drops hitting the glass, a silence and a unique noise.

So Bette does not want the surgery. There is no motivation to take the risk in her eyes.
When you are dealing with someone who has a terminal condition is difficult. And when you are dealing with someone who is in a state of decline and been on this path for two years and basically restricted to a hospital for that amount of time, and has no significant other or family, then depression and the lack of will to follow medical advice becomes a reality. And if there is any kind of stubbornness, it becomes a mountain to overcome. The fear of dying becomes brings death at a faster rate. Maybe Tina can convince Bette to have the surgery for her. However, Bette viewing Tina as just having pity for her rather than true attachment may be another barrier to overcome.
They say doctors make the worst patients. I think that Bette Porter would hold all the records as far as being a bad patient. It is nice that Tina has become her friend…
Thanks for the chapter.
