Slow Simmer
“You seem upset. Are you upset?”
“I’m fine.” Bette lifted her glasses slightly to pinch the bridge of her nose.
“You’re fine?” Tina nodded, biting the inside of her mouth. Her voice was husky with a tinge of disbelief.
“Fine.” Bette stood straighter, shifting her weight from one foot to the other.
“I don’t think you’re fine. You look like you’ve been crying.” Tina’s face softened, her hands reaching up for Bette’s glasses.
Bette leaned back slightly from Tina. “Just tired. I have a lot going on.” Bette found it difficult to look at her.
Tina took Bette’s glasses into her hands and folded them. “Bette.”
“Tina,” Bette whispered. “Please go.”
“Bette, I know the difference. When you’re tired, your eyes get puffy, the rims turn red. When you have been crying, your eyes squint, and everything seems to drain from your face. You pale, your cheeks draw lower, your eyes cower deep into their sockets, and your mouth…” Tina placed her palm to Bette’s face, her thumb tracing the frown lines around Bette’s lips. “Your mouth betrays any lie you’ve ever tried to tell me.”
Bette’s insides were shaking uncontrollably; emotional impulses bubbling to the surface.
Bette leaned into Tina’s hand, rolling her neck until she realized what she was doing. She turned and walked away towards the stairs.
“Why are you here?”
“I wasn’t comfortable with the way we left things.”
“How did we leave things? You’re getting married. We had champagne. End of story.”
Tina’s chest heaved with a guttural sigh. Her eyes never leaving Bette’s mouth, desperately searching for any trace of doubt from Bette in what she just said. “End of -,” Tina started the question but Bette cut her off.
“Now, I’m going to go upstairs. Lock the door on your way out. I know Angie gave you a new key.”
Bette started up the steps.
“Bette…turn around.”
Dammit, Tina.
Bette did as requested. Her face as apprehensive as every other time she heard those words from her ex-wife.
“What?” It wasn’t a question really coming from Bette. It was a pinch. It was a plead. It was an anticipation.
“I didn’t want champagne.”
“Ok, then. Good, I’ll know that for next time. Goodnight.” Bette turned and took another step up.

This is a good story…. however, I think that Tina is a royal bitch. Sorry… what was the purpose of that? Sex for old time sakes? Seduce Bette? Then walk out the door to go meet with Carrie and carry on with the marriage plans? I find this Tina to be rather sadistic at best. She is being cruel and heartless to have announced her marriage, seduce Bette and leave her with a “I’ll always love you.”
Oh, and it is not Bette’s role in life to determine whether Tina is happy or not. It is a presumption that all people make the choices in their life for their own benefit and happiness. If Tina has agreed to marry Carrie, its because she wants to marry Carrie and believes it will result in happiness in her life. If that is not Tina’s belief then she is the one who needs to make another decision and take the actions that will make her happy. Tina is a grown woman – she choose to leave Bette, She agreed to marry Carrie and now she is using Bette apparently for her own physical pleasure for whatever reason. This is cruel for all those involved…. not good Tina…. Not good at all.
Thanks for the chapter…

I’m glad it wasn’t just me who felt the same way at the end of this story. My heart fell with sadness for Bette at being used by Tina.
After that i wouldn’t want to fight for Tine after that cruelty.

Loved this story. But I think I had a different interpretation than others. I don’t think Tina was being cruel. I think she’s acting like the lost little bird she always is when she’s not ‘with’ Bette. She knows she loves Bette, she tells Bette she loves her but now she’s made everything worse, panics, and runs. I still hope you continue it
