Once Niki and her co-star became comfortable with each other’s nudity and learned a few techniques from the coaching they were very believable as lesbian lovers. So much so that people actually thought they were having an affair off the set. It was a good thing that Niki and Greg had the type of relationship that could withstand the speculation. They’d been happily married for five years and had a three year old daughter. Niki was totally devoted to her husband and family but that didn’t stop her from what some had termed playing ‘gay for pay’. She loved her craft and she was always seeking roles that took her out of her comfort zone. She’d have taken the role regardless of the character’s sexual orientation because it was a story that defied gender. Everyone could relate to the heartbreak of first love on their personal journey of self-discovery and findings one’s identity. It was a powerful role and a powerful message that she’d hope would inspire all people not just women. She’d been proud to play Jessie as a lesbian which made it that much more disheartening when Kate had told her they were reshooting the ending to have her go back to Jim and their mundane heterosexual life.
Not that there was anything wrong with the mundane, after all it was her reality and she wouldn’t have it any other way but it just didn’t fit for Jessie. Watching Tina with Bette and how perfectly they fit Niki could understand why Tina had been so adamantly against the changes. Not only because as executive producer she wanted to maintain the integrity of the story but also because it was Tina’s reality. Tina and Bette belonged together same as her and Greg.

The four couples enjoyed a wonderful dinner together and pretty soon the conversation at the table moved away from the movie business and they talked about their lives and got to know each other better. The proud mothers pulled out their phones and passed them around showing off digital photos of their kids. Bette even had some of Alex on her phone that Tina hadn’t seen yet which saddened her.
They went around the table and Julie and Greg got a chance to talk about their careers. Julie was a teacher and Greg was an entrepreneur. Bette talked briefly about her art gallery and extended an invitation to everyone to visit the Hammer Museum for the upcoming “Maxx Wolff and Allyn Barnes Side by Side” retrospective which featured her mother’s paintings. No one in the group except Tina and Sam had ever heard of Allyn Barnes or Maxx Wolff but they were fascinated with Bette’s stories of how these two passionate women and their art shaped her life and love of artistic expression. She was about to tell them about her daring escapades in college when she’d been determined to meet Allyn Barnes as the recluse was the subject of Bette’s thesis but was interrupted by the clinking of utensils against crystal glasses. The conversations quieted and everyone in the room turned towards the sound. It was coming from the front of the room where a slightly elevated stage had been set up.
