The Roommates – Pride & Prejudice: Chapter 8

The art-history major from San Diego noticed all of these things without realizing she was even so aware of Debbie Lawrence and the two shared polite smiles as Bette and Damon chit-chatted while waiting for a table to open up. It wasn’t long before the trio slid into a table for four and placed their orders.

Their conversation flowed smoothly and as they spoke, Bette was able to pick up on an inherent shyness in Debbie that wasn’t so apparent when they first met. In their brother-sister dynamic, Damon was clearly the extrovert.

Half-way through their meal, Damon asked, “So…how is Tina?”

Bette smiled, color rushing to her sun-bronzed cheeks. “She’s great. I’m going to visit her in a few weeks.”

Damon popped a french fry into his mouth and smiled, “That’s really cool, B. Very good news.”

    “Tina?” asked Debbie.

“My…my girlfriend,” Bette replied, meeting the captivating copper colored eyes once more.

Debbie’s eyes lit up with understanding and she simply replied, “Oh.”

Bette tossed Damon a mildly confused glance. “You didn’t tell her.”

Damon shook his head. “Wasn’t really my business to tell. You’re my friend. That’s all that was important.”

Bette’s dark eyes narrowed and studied him for a second. “Who are you?”

Damon chuckled. “It’s me! It’s really me.”

Bette rolled eyes and tossed Debbie a signature smile. “He was such a dick before. Such a dick. I couldn’t stand him. Now he’s Mr. Tolerance and Maturity.”

The football player sighed. “You’re never going to let me live it down, are you?”

“No, I’m not. You were an ass.”

He shrugged. “I was. I really was.”

Debbie eyed her brother. “What changed?” she asked.

“Bette. Life. Circumstance. Bette just never tolerated my shit. She refused to deal with it. She forced me to accept her or just leave her alone. And then I started to really see how she had just as much right to be who she wanted to be as I did. Just as much right to date who she wanted. Love who she wanted.”

Debbie’s eyes clouded and she suddenly found renewed interest in stirring her tea.

Bette remembered the shattered Sapphic romance in Debbie’s past and felt the subtle dark change in her companion’s demeanor. Her dark eyes flipped back to Damon.

    1. These girls are just so into each other they’re having trouble staying focused. I agree with bombasticbully. There is drama up ahead!! I love your long posts. Thanks for sharing your talent with us once again. PPS

    2. MTS–I’m sensing drama on the horizon in the guise of Debbie and Eric! Let’s get Bette and Tina together in LA sooner than the 2 weeks! I’m holding up a banner in hopes that will happen. PPS

    3. You know that summer is over with and schools are back in session? Bette and Tina are trying so hard to survive with this long distance between them. Please help them to continue to want to stay together.

    4. Awww MTS, you just made our day brighter! B’s reunion with Damon was very charming. They have been through a lot and they are sincerely bonded as close friends. Hmmm As for B meeting Debbie in the flesh, it was quite an experience for her, as they both share the same uncomprehension from some members of their families. Janice is being more perceptive of her daughter and we could appreciate her concern about B missing his father. B&T’s conversation was so sweet and honest, as usual. We smiled when Tina’s green monster of jealousy was so evident, while learning about Debbie. But above all, you can breathe and feel the magic of their love. You are taking us into a wonderful ride. Thanks for this marvellous update, MTS. We truly enjoyed it! PPS Lucero & Marsha (JC’s Salsa Aunties)

    6. Hello MTS, Great to have another wonderful piece of this puzzle from Your. I just adore the reality of Bette and Tina’s love for each other here. These girls so belong, willingly, to each other. There is not a question of that. And it is something that everyone around them can realize. David saw it, Debbie saw and even Gina saw it. They are so affected by each other that even 3000 miles can not quench their love and attraction. The night time calls are so sweet and precious. Can’t wait to reac more of this terrific tale. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.
