The Roommates – Pride & Prejudice: Chapter 8

“Hmm. Do you like it?” asked Bette.

“No. But it distracts me. Keeps my mind busy. Sometimes I work so much I don’t even have time to think. And I like that.”

“When you get out of here, where do you plan to go?” asked Bette.

The older woman shrugged and met her new companion’s friendly brown eyes. “I don’t know. Maybe West Hollywood. Somewhere different. I’m not happy in New York.”

“Why? Because you work too much?”

Debbie’s sweet voice offered a somber chuckle. “You know it’s funny, I honestly don’t think me being unhappy is about New York. I’d probably still be unhappy in Cali or anyplace else, but at least then I could say I tried a change of pace. That I went out and tried to be happy.”

“Are you unhappy because of your parents? Because of how they treat you?” asked Bette.

This question triggered a sharp intake of breath from Debbie Lawrence and Bette’s eyes grew sad, “I’m sorry. Was I not supposed to ask that? I didn’t mean to – – -,” she began.

    “It’s fine. I just…didn’t expect it.”

And that was the end of the conversation. Damon returned and Bette felt she should just leave the topic alone. She understood the subtle pain in Debbie’s eyes as it was nearly a reflection of her own.

Their meals finished, Debbie paid the group’s bill and the trio made their way back out to Times Square. They walked around, stopped in a few shops, and took ultra-touristy pictures of themselves. Time had betrayed them and before she knew it, it was nearly seven in the evening.

Debbie invited Bette to join her and her brother back at her apartment, but the tall young woman declined, realizing that tomorrow was a workday and that she needed to reset herself if she wanted to evoke astonishing at 7:30 am.

Damon was leaving the following morning and he and Bette shared warm hugs and promises to keep in touch for the remainder of the summer. When she pulled back from him, Bette met Debbie’s soft gaze.

“It was nice meeting you,” she said.

Debbie nodded. “Likewise. Maybe we should get together some time while you’re still here in the city.”

    1. These girls are just so into each other they’re having trouble staying focused. I agree with bombasticbully. There is drama up ahead!! I love your long posts. Thanks for sharing your talent with us once again. PPS

    2. You know that summer is over with and schools are back in session? Bette and Tina are trying so hard to survive with this long distance between them. Please help them to continue to want to stay together.

    3. Awww MTS, you just made our day brighter! B’s reunion with Damon was very charming. They have been through a lot and they are sincerely bonded as close friends. Hmmm As for B meeting Debbie in the flesh, it was quite an experience for her, as they both share the same uncomprehension from some members of their families. Janice is being more perceptive of her daughter and we could appreciate her concern about B missing his father. B&T’s conversation was so sweet and honest, as usual. We smiled when Tina’s green monster of jealousy was so evident, while learning about Debbie. But above all, you can breathe and feel the magic of their love. You are taking us into a wonderful ride. Thanks for this marvellous update, MTS. We truly enjoyed it! PPS Lucero & Marsha (JC’s Salsa Aunties)

    5. Hello MTS, Great to have another wonderful piece of this puzzle from Your. I just adore the reality of Bette and Tina’s love for each other here. These girls so belong, willingly, to each other. There is not a question of that. And it is something that everyone around them can realize. David saw it, Debbie saw and even Gina saw it. They are so affected by each other that even 3000 miles can not quench their love and attraction. The night time calls are so sweet and precious. Can’t wait to reac more of this terrific tale. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.
