The Roommates – Pride & Prejudice: Chapter 8

“What about Tracy? How is she?”

It was a simple question really. And though it was a simple question, the fact that Tracy was Damon’s favorite topic of discussion meant the answer to that question lasted for the next 15 minutes with nary a break in the flow of animated words from Damon’s lips.

With her chin resting on her hand, Debbie finally asked him, “So when are you going to marry this girl?”

“When your mother and father step up out of 1965 and realize that segregation is over,” he replied.

“Well, good luck waiting on that,” said Debbie.

“I’ve been waiting all this time and they still haven’t changed,” said Damon.

“Did Damon tell you that I served as his faux-girlfriend when your parents visited?” asked Bette.

Debbie gave a small smile. “I hadn’t heard about that one.”

Damon smiled in return and as he watched his female-best friend and his big sister converse, he breathed a sigh of relief. There was no hint of tightly-wound tension in his sister’s eyes. The subject of their parents had been a sensitive one between them since they’d disowned the older Lawrence sibling on the basis of her sexuality. They refused to see her or speak with her and because of the pain their mention typically caused his sister, Damon rarely discussed them with Debbie. And he definitely didn’t discuss their visiting him. Patricia & Edmond Lawrence wouldn’t step foot on a plane to visit with their eldest child and Damon didn’t want to mention their flying across country to see him.

“Sounds like you two have had a lot of fun this year. Thanks for keeping an eye on my baby brother. He’s always been a handful,” Debbie remarked.

“And he still is,” Bette interjected.

Damon sipped the last of his drink until the melting ice slurped against his stray. “I’m gonna head to the bathroom. Anybody heading that way?” he asked as he stood.

Both women shook their head in the negative and shortly thereafter, they were alone.

“I’m not really big on public restrooms. Especially in New York City,” Debbie remarked.

Bette nodded. “So…what do you do?”

Debbie sighed and fingered the earth-stone beaded necklace that fell gracefully around her coffee-with cream colored neck and replied, “I’m an investment banker. I work in the financial district. Long hours….great pay. Hopefully it won’t take me too long to get out of here.”

    1. These girls are just so into each other they’re having trouble staying focused. I agree with bombasticbully. There is drama up ahead!! I love your long posts. Thanks for sharing your talent with us once again. PPS

    2. MTS–I’m sensing drama on the horizon in the guise of Debbie and Eric! Let’s get Bette and Tina together in LA sooner than the 2 weeks! I’m holding up a banner in hopes that will happen. PPS

    3. You know that summer is over with and schools are back in session? Bette and Tina are trying so hard to survive with this long distance between them. Please help them to continue to want to stay together.

    4. Awww MTS, you just made our day brighter! B’s reunion with Damon was very charming. They have been through a lot and they are sincerely bonded as close friends. Hmmm As for B meeting Debbie in the flesh, it was quite an experience for her, as they both share the same uncomprehension from some members of their families. Janice is being more perceptive of her daughter and we could appreciate her concern about B missing his father. B&T’s conversation was so sweet and honest, as usual. We smiled when Tina’s green monster of jealousy was so evident, while learning about Debbie. But above all, you can breathe and feel the magic of their love. You are taking us into a wonderful ride. Thanks for this marvellous update, MTS. We truly enjoyed it! PPS Lucero & Marsha (JC’s Salsa Aunties)

    6. Hello MTS, Great to have another wonderful piece of this puzzle from Your. I just adore the reality of Bette and Tina’s love for each other here. These girls so belong, willingly, to each other. There is not a question of that. And it is something that everyone around them can realize. David saw it, Debbie saw and even Gina saw it. They are so affected by each other that even 3000 miles can not quench their love and attraction. The night time calls are so sweet and precious. Can’t wait to reac more of this terrific tale. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.
