When Fate Meets Destiny—Chapter 4
“Why do you say that Tina?”
She sighs. “Bette I have dated women and relationships have been short lived because nothing comes close to what I want and I’m not settling just to settle. I’m really ok being alone. I have my work in London that keeps me busy and I love it there. I don’t need anything else”
I shake my head. I don’t deserve this woman. I dont deserve her love that she has given me and I have never felt it in the way she wanted me too. Not until now. And I am not in a place to return that love that I so desperately want to give her. I know this isn’t my fault but I feel guilty. But I couldn’t help to focus on her last statement
“You are thinking about staying in London?” God please say no. This will complicate things if she decides to stay there
She nods and I feel my chest tighten
“Yeah. I believe I am. Since Mom..”. She pauses “There’s nothing keeping me here. Mr. Gellman wants me to stay on with their firm after the London bridge project is done. They already have a contract in Italy that will take a couple of years. I’ve been asked to head that project. I was going to turn it down but I am going to tell him I’m taking it”
I nod. What else can I do? But Fuck. I can’t stop her.
“You know I will support you no matter what. And if you need anything you have me ok..I’ll be here for you always”
She smiles at me “You know that goes both ways”
I nod. “So uh. When do you have to go back?” I ask and finish what’s left of my coffee.
“Well I am going to take care of things here and then go visit Skylar in Nevada for a few days. She’s about to have her first child”
My eyes light up “Oh wow. That’s great! I’m so happy for them”
“Me too. My first godchild” she smiles
I smile and I can see the happiness on her face and it warms my heart. Tina will be a great godmother. And I know she would be a great mother someday. I shake my head at thought because I want to be the one experiencing that with her if that time ever comes

Seems that Bette and Melissa worked rather diligently to try to save their marriage. If their problems seem to begin eleven years ago with their move to New York… that’s a long period for things to break down and become unresolvable. And they did move back to Philadelphia a few years later, but still they could not resolve their differences enough to sustain their marriage. Yet, they love each other still. I wonder… did they really love each other? Or perhaps they loved the idea of the other. In some people, they form an image of who the other is and have a tendency to to ignore the reality of who they are. No person is perfect. All people have flaws… a relationship is sometimes determined on whether each one can live with the flaws or not. Perhaps a judgement that the cost out weighs the benefits? Or is there a more suitable partner elsewhere? Something about Bette and Melissa’s relationship says something like this is going on. From the story so far, Bette has been devoted to Melissa and to Maddy. She has not allowed anything to challenge her relationship to Melissa, not even her repressed attraction to Tina. She may not have been honest with herself, but she did not allow it to get between her and Melissa. It appears to me, that between Melissa and Bette, sometimes love just simply is not enough.
Tina’s hearing of the conversation between Bette and Melissa on having a second child is heart breaking. This would be a major issue in this couple where one wants another child and the other is showing signs that it is not going to happen. I imagine that this would not be the only conversation between Bette and Melissa on the subject. I can see that this would be the beginning of the dissolution of their marriage. It would appear that the sole glue to keep them together then would become Maddy.
This was a very thought provoking chapter on Bette’s history. Now that Bette is going to begin to pursue Tina…. I am anxious to see how she does that. Under the right circumstances and the right conditions, I do not think it will take very long for these two to become a couple.
Thanks for the update.
Agree with Martha her opinion on this chapter.
Let’s see how this will go, looks like Bette is making first steps to be closer to Tina.
