“So we should call you …”

    “Jay.”

The three looked at her with puzzled expressions.

Bette thought quickly. “Forget Bette. Bette’s what my mom uses … like Jordie here … because her own mom’s name was Bette, and she says I remind her of her mom.”

    They nodded understandingly. Moms.

Jordie handed her the post-its and pen. “Jay’s an unusual name, though.”

Bette nodded her thanks. “After Jay DeFeo. A painter. Abstract expressionist. Terrific.”   Not after Jay, my bestie. Who became Kaci. And who’s now gone.

Jenn and Sam exchanged a quick glance, reading each other. “Have never heard of him.”

Bette smiled, and motioned that the three of them should follow her behind the sculpted steel-topped bar. “Not a him. Her.”

When they joined her behind the steel-topped bar she waved at the gleaming Italian coffee machine that occupied a sizable chunk of the space.

“So did they teach you how to operate this thing when you were in Sightglass? Not everyone gets to handle their best machines, from what I understand. But all of us are going to have to know how to make all the different types of coffees using this machine ok?”

The three slowly walked over to the machine, space-agey, gleaming like highly polished silver, not daring to touch the various nooks, paddles, and spouts that sprung out of it here and there. They’d only seen it in a few cafes but none of them had ever worked with this type of machine. Only the expert baristas had been allowed to even go near those.

There was one other machine, at the other end of stone-topped kitchen bar that was set against the wall. Sam pointed at it. “And what’s that?”

Bette clapped her hands together in excitement. “That’s our coupe de grace’.”

The three raised their eyebrows at her simultaneously.

    “It makes nitro-brew cold coffee.”

Their puzzled looks indicated they still didn’t know what it was.

Bette sighed. “That’s ok. I can run that machine. You girls will take care of everything else with this Italian beauty.”

She caressed the state-of-the-art coffee machine.

“Why get such an expensive machine, Jay? Couldn’t you have bought something else? Upgrade to something like this later?” one of them asked.

It was Bette’s turn to give them a puzzled look. Then she sighed.

    1. Skydancer, thank you for the update.

I was certain you would bring Tina in the café to meet Bette. But maybe it is Tina and she had to change her name too and needed to hide.

Lena or Tina doesn’t matter at the, moment, Bette can use some tender loving to reliesh her stress.

      • Nice chapter, skydancer. In some email exchanges with @Jacky, she’s passed on to me that she doesn’t expect, nor want writers to self-censor. Just write what you want and let the chips fall where they may. Gotta love that woman. I would just avoid keywords that would be caught by any sniffer. I’m sure you have an idea of what words might attract attention. Other than that, I say bring on the TLC!

    2. Really like this so far. If not mistaken, in the first chapter, I believe that I read that a film crew would be in the area very soon. So if you didn’t change Tinas’ occupation, then that is when she will show up. Right? Must go back and read that first chapter for some clarification of all this. Thanks for sharing. Can hardly wait for Tina to appear.

      • Hi @Jane, I was referring to warning or instructions you see when you start to post a new chapter or story. The warning is new, and informs you that Google is screening for mature content in the text, not just in pics that are posted. Since the site relies on Google providing a platform for it (I think), I took it seriously. I also took it to mean Google is screening other posted chapters (and I’ve posted a bunch of chapters with sexy scenes, so ….). But @Jacky is saying not to worry, so, I guess that means I can (?) does that clear it up for you?

    3. Hmmm, very, very interesting. Our favorite girls having to survive in a Red State, living underground, and communicating thru code! Sort of like life right now! Again. Please keep writing so I can relive this
