Chapter 33 – Days of Fun and Then New Haven

Mary: Tina, all of this is brand new to Suzanne. She has no experience with gay people outside of possibly some of her high school classmates. She has not had the experience of being around a lot of adults while growing up as Angie has had. She comes from a very middle-class background without a lot of opportunities to travel or experience the things that Angie has. I think that she is going to be a very good roommate for Angie. She will be cautious with new experiences and she will make decisions with her eyes wide open. At least for a while.

Tina: I am just so glad she is not a trust baby. She seems to know that whatever she wants in her life, she is the one who will have to work for it. It will not be handed to her on a silver platter. Yes, I think this is going to be very good for Angie.

They were seated at the table. Daniel was smiling as he knew that the meal was the next item on the agenda.

Bette:  Are Angie and Suzanne in the lady’s room?

Mary:  Yes, they are. So, what do you think of Suzanne?

Bette:  She seems like a very sweet, intelligent young lady. I think she will do well here at Yale.

Tina: Do you think Suzanne and Angie will do okay as roommates?

Bette:  They will be fine.  They will have a few bumps along the way, but they are young and seem to be willing to negotiate, so they will work things out. If they don’t, well, next semester, they will both have new roommates. But I see nothing to indicate that will happen. It’s an exciting new adventure for both of them. It’s a brand-new world and a brand-new life.

Daniel: Do you think we could have some appetizers tonight? How about the stuffed mushrooms and some chicken wings?  But not the spicy ones please, the plain ones.

Tina:  Yes, I think we could do that. Bette, would you like for me to order for the table or would you like the honor?

Bette: Whatever you would like dear. I only do the ordering because traditionally, the person who does the ordering is the one who gets to take care of the bill. And you are the only one that I would give that honor to at least on this trip.
