Lost & Found in the Rain

Lara: (raising an eyebrow) Different how? Because word on the street is that Bette Porter doesn’t do ’nice.’ She does ’fun,’ and then she does ’gone.’

Tina sits down, fiddling with the hem of her shirt.

Tina: I know she has a reputation, but she’s been nothing but sweet to me. I think there’s more to her than people realize.

Lara: (smiling gently) Well, if she makes you happy, that’s all that matters. Just… be careful, okay?

    Tina: I will. Thanks, Lara.

As they’re talking, Helena, another friend of Tina and Lara, walks in, her polished and confident demeanor immediately filling the room. She looks between them, sensing the topic.

Helena: What’s going on here? You look like you’re gossiping.

Lara: (grinning) Tina went on a date with Bette Porter.

Helena’s smile fades, her expression turning serious.

Helena: Bette Porter? As in ”THE BETTE PORTER”? (folding her arms) Tell me you’re joking.

The energy in the room shifts immediate.

    Tina frowns.

    Tina: Excuse me?

Helena sighs, dropping onto the bed across from her.

Helena: Bette Porter? Of all people?

Tina: (defensive) Why does everyone act like dating her is some kind of crime?

Helena: (crossing her arms) Tina, you need to stay far away from her. She’s bad news.

Tina: (frowning) Why would you say that? You don’t even know her.

Helena leans forward, her voice softer than expected.

Helena: Tina, I know Bette. I know how she operates. She burns hot, but she burns out fast.

Tina: She told me about her past.

Helena: Did she tell you about Sophia?

Tina shakes her head, confused. Lara looks curious but stays quiet.

Helena: (sighing) Sophia was a friend of mine. She met Bette at a party last year. Bette was charming, attentive everything Sophia wanted to hear. They started seeing each other, and Sophia fell hard. But as soon as Bette got what she wanted, she disappeared. Stopped answering calls, ignored her on campus. Sophia was devastated.

Tina: (hesitant) People change, Helena. Maybe she’s not like that anymore.

Helena: (firmly) Maybe. But can you really afford to take that chance? You’re too good to be someone’s fling, Tina. Don’t let her hurt you the way she hurt Sophia and others.

Tina looks down, her confidence shaken. Lara places a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

    1. I loved how the scene played out, mostly because they were so honest with each other and actually talked things out rather than running away. Tina needs to make her own decisions and trust Bette rather than being influenced by friends. Bette needs to be honest with herself and knowing her past reputation should not prevent her from growing and loving respectfully. We know they made it to a certain point then things fell apart. I look forward to you filling in the years between when they met in college and how they ended up in divorce court. Great writing style. Thank you for sharing this story!

      • I really appreciate your thoughtful insight, It’s indeed a significant moment for Tina to trust her heart and for Bette to demonstrate her commitment to change. The journey from where they began to where they are now is rich with history and emotion, and it’s thrilling to delve into that narrative. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts.

      • The rain wasn’t just a backdrop it was a storm brewing between them, mirroring every unspoken fear, every desperate hope. They weren’t just standing in the downpour; they were drowning in their emotions, clinging to each other like lifelines. And Helena? She struck the match, but Bette and Tina were always going to be the wildfire. There’s so much more to unfold, and I promise, the intensity is far from over.

    2. Oh geez, most definitely continue with this story. I like how skeptical Tina is of Bette from all the horror stories told to her about how Bette loves them then leaves them with no commitments. Please hurry with new chapters. Now that they are both soaked from the rain will they go to Tina’s room, Bette’s room or each to 5heir own rooms to change clothes and get dry.

      • The rain wasn’t just a setting it was a force, relentless and unforgiving, much like the emotions crashing between them. Bette, for so long, had been untouchable, slipping through hearts like sand, never staying long enough to leave a mark that mattered. But Tina? She was different. She wasn’t just another fleeting moment. And that terrified both of them.

Tina had every reason to hesitate. The stories of Bette’s past weren’t just whispers they were warnings. Bette was the storm people admired from a distance, never daring to step too close, because those who did never left unscathed. And yet, here they were, soaked and breathless, standing at the edge of something dangerous, something real. There’s still so much more to unravel and I’m excited to take you along for the journey. Appreciate your support.
