    The Conversion

Tina: Thank you. Coming from a well accomplished author like you, that is a wonderful compliment.

Helena then arrived and asked us if we were ready to go to dinner. She then introduced us to Mark Langford. Mark was President Biden’s personal assistant and Helena’s husband. He and Helena were close in age. Both were in their mid-forties. They came to work for the Biden’s in 2024 with Biden’s second term.

We were shown to the Presidential dining room which had a table which seated eight people comfortably.  The President and First Lady entered the room just after we did and we were seated. The stewards began to fill the water glasses and offer us wine. Bette and I accept as well as Helena and the First Lady.  Mark and the President declined. The President said something about that it conflicted with some of his medications. The meal proceeded with a lovely green salad which had dried cranberries, walnuts, feta cheese and a wonderful vinaigrette dressing. After that we were served a generous serving of lasagna. This seemed to be one of President Biden’s favorite meals. It reminded him of his childhood in Pennsylvania. Evidently, his family lived in an Irish Catholic neighborhood with some Italians scattered about and this was a family favorite. I remember that it truly was delicious. Or perhaps it was that I was just really hungry and ready for a meal.

Dr Biden:  This is not for public consumption just yet, but I believe this is going to be my last term at the community college. I know the Secret Service is going to be grateful, but I think I need to stay closer to Joe.

Everyone was quiet. But everyone could tell that Joe Biden was beginning to show the stress of the job in his physical well-being.  He was having more problems with his speech. He had suffered with a lifelong stutter. And it was becoming more of a problem as he grew older.

Bette was seated across the table from me. I was seated between Joe and Mark. Bette sat between Helena and Jill. And the couples sat next to one another.  The conversation carried on as to what the plans were for the weekend. Joe seemed to be looking forward to getting away from the White House. He would have preferred to go home to Wilmington but was happy to be going to Camp David instead.

      • Janice24,

First of all this story is an alternative time and life for our Bette and Tina. The story is being told by a woman who is older (85 years old) and has experienced a full and joyful life with the woman she loved. They have had more than 40 years together even though they didn’t meet until they were middled aged. I like that they took the time to get to know one another for a few days before charging into a romantic relationship. I like that Bette insist that Tina think about her own life and if she is prepared for the changes which will occur as they start to see each other romantically. Bette wants Tina to make her decision about her life knowing the possible downside. For me, that shows immediately how much Bette respects and cares for Tina right out of starting gates. I also like that Bette insist they talk about things fully as they go. She seeks out Tina’s boundaries and comfort level before they do anything. This is why their relationship is so strong…. they hide nothing from each other.

From the idea to publication, I took 4 days… I enjoyed writing this story because I could see that both Bette and Tina would go from a mundane life to a life of love and devotion within a matter of weeks. And it would result in a lifetime of happiness. Isn’t that what we all want in our lives?

Thank for reading and for commenting on this story… until I saw your comments, I didn’t think anyone had read it…. Thank you for your support and encouragement…

      • OneStorm1 – Thank you for reading… I published this a little more than a year ago and I posted it this year on Achieve of Our Own. I do have three long book stories which is a single series and one other one shot which is about the same length as this one. I then not to writer about angst and problems between Bette and Tina. I think there are plenty of authors who present those kind of stories. All my published stories are on this website. Go to the story search page, put my name in under author (Martha3128) and they are all listed.
